Dr. Sucharita Datta is a classical dancer specializing in Kathak( both of Lucknow as well as Jaipur Gharanas) from Kolkata, West Bengal. From a very tender age, Sucharita started learning the dance form from the legendary gurus of India.
At first, Sucharita started learning Kathak dance of Lucknow Gharana from Guru Prof. Smt. Amita Datta. Sucharita came out first in West Bengal State Music Academy competition of Kathak Dance. Thereafter she took simultaneously training in the Jaipur Gharana of Kathak Dance under Guru Smt. Susmita Mishra. Sucharita achieved National Scholarship from Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (Govt. of India). In the meantime Sucharita with a view to learning, in details, the classical dance form of Kathak, got herself admitted to Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata in the subject Kathak Dance. She came out after topping in all examinations up to M.A level earning Gold Medals etc in Kathak.
In her thirst to master the subject as a student of Kathak in its many splendoured beauty and variations Sucharita came in contact with Smt Saswati Sen and Padma Vibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj, from whom she got the opportunity to learn the subject of the Lucknow Gharana almost anew and performed in major roles in almost all of Maharajjis subsequent productions, eg. Romeo Juliet, Rupmati Baazbahadur, Hori-Khela, Geetgovindam, etc Incidentally, among all the roles Sucharita has played so Far, she considers her role of Krishna in Geet- Govindam, throughout India, most satisfying.
With a view to having a thorough idea of the north Indian classical dance music, she took training in Taal & Laya from the renowned Tabla exponent Pt. Kumar Bose for a couple of years.
At the moment Sucharita is taking regular lessons in north Indian light classical music, like, Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan, Kajri, Chaiti, Hori, Gazal, etc from the renowned Thumri exponent Vidushi Dalia Rahut.
Sucharita has subsequently been awarded Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in the Kathak Dance from the Rabindra Bharati University, under the guidance of Dr. (Prof) Smt Mahua Mukherjee.
Sucharita has obtained the Junior fellowship in the field of Kathak Dance for a period of two years from the C.C.R.T., Govt of India.
With a view to quenching her thirst for learning the intricacies of classical dance forms of India Sucharita continued Bharatnatyam in all its splendor and glory. She started learning Bharatnatyam from Guru Smt Girija BalGopal under the overall guidance of Guru Smt. Thankomoni Kutty in Kalamandalam Kolkata
and later on under the guidance of Guru Sri Kalamandalam V.R. Venkitt.She also took training in Kathakali dance under Guru Sri Kalamandalam V. R. Venkitt. She also learned intricacies of Bharatnatyam dance by attending special workshops by the famous danseuse Smt Rema Srikant & Smt.Chitra Visweswaran.
Sucharita also took the first position in Bharatnatyam competition at West Bengal State Music Academy.
Sucharita has performed solo almost all importance Dance Festivals in India as well as abroad(Thailand, Bangkok, South Korea, U.S.A). In addition, Dr. Sucharita Datta is a renowned choreographer and teacher of Kathak as well as Bharatnatyam dance. She runs a dance institution named “Nritya Dhrupadi Dance & Music Research Centre”.Where from many students have come out with proper training and guidance. Many students are achieving National Scholarships, prizes and awards at the state as well as National level.
Sucharita is currently busy fulltime with her own performances, Lecture- demonstrations, seminars, workshops, teaching and rehearsing choreography with the students of Nritya Dhrupadi (own organization).
Currently, Sucharita is acting as regular examiner(Practical) of the Dance Department of the Rabindra Bharati University. She is the regular examiner of Kathak and Bharatnatyam dance forms of various organizations/Institutes,eg-Sarba Bharatiya Sangeet Parishad, Neheru Children Museum, State Rajya YuvaSammelan, etc.
